Provenance

L, = origin For archival purposes the provenance of a book, printed material or manuscript refers to its record of ownership (the list of previous owners), from its time of creation till the present day (where it is held). An example: the provenance of the autograph score of the Sixth Symphony in F major op. 68, Beethoven-Haus Bonn, BH 64: Domenico Artaria in Vienna, Baron Jan Marie Huijssen van Kattendijke in Arnheim. At the auction of Beethoven's musical estate in November 1827, Artaria bought the second and last movements of the Symphony - he already owned the other movements. In 1838 he sold the complete autograph score to Baron Huijssen van Kattendijke. In turn he then sold the autograph score to the Beethoven-Haus in 1910.
